Today, March 6, 2024, Ghana celebrates 67 years since gaining independence from British colonial rule. After enduring 83 years of colonization, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve freedom from Britain.

The inaugural President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, considered this liberation a significant milestone for the nation. Each year, on March 6, nationwide celebrations take place, lasting throughout the month.

This year’s national anniversary event will be held at the Youth Resource Centre in Koforidua, Eastern Region. President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire will be the Special Guest of Honour. The festivities will include a parade featuring security services, students, pupils, and various groups.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Our Democracy, Our Pride.” Approximately 120 ambassadors and high commissioners from different countries, along with Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament and the 275 Members of Parliament, are expected to attend.
