Theresa May to Step Down as Member of Parliament

SHARE

Former UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced she won’t run for re-election in the next vote later this year. May, 67, served as prime minister from 2016 to 2019. She represented the Maidenhead constituency since 1997.

May said she enjoyed being a backbencher but felt she couldn’t do her job as an MP properly anymore due to other commitments, like fighting modern slavery. Her Conservative party has been trailing behind the main opposition Labour Party in recent polls.

May faced criticism during her time as prime minister, especially for her handling of Brexit negotiations. Her decision ends her 27-year career as an MP.
