Alert: Enugu Police Nab Man Trafficking Fake Naira Notes in Afor Market

The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended Chukwuebuka Igwebuike on allegations of duping unsuspecting traders with counterfeit ₦1,000 notes in the Afor Market area of Garki Awkunanaw.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, Igwebuike reportedly amassed a total of ₦362,000 in fake currency, employing a deceptive tactic. The suspect would use the counterfeit notes to purchase goods of lesser value, receiving genuine smaller denominations as change, all without arousing suspicion from the traders.

The arrest was made following a tip-off received by operatives in the Awkunanaw Division, prompting swift action to apprehend the suspect.

In a statement, Ndukwe said, “Police operatives serving in Awkunanaw Division of the Enugu State Command, acting on a tip-off, on 19/12/2023 at about 6 p.m., arrested a male suspect, one Chukwuebuka Igwebuike aged 37, at Afor Market, Garki Awkunanaw, Enugu, and recovered from him suspected counterfeit N1,000 notes, totaling ₦362,000.”

The spokesperson added that the suspect has confessed to the crime and will face legal proceedings once the investigation is completed.

“Preliminary investigation proves that the suspect confessed to the crime, stating that he used the fake one thousand Naira notes to buy items of small prices and get change for genuine smaller denominations. He shall be arraigned in court and prosecuted accordingly once ongoing investigations are concluded,” Ndukwe stated.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has urged citizens to remain vigilant during the festive season, advising them to promptly report individuals in possession or involved in transactions with counterfeit Nigerian Naira notes to the nearest police station for necessary actions.
