Nairaland Server Faces Downtime Due to Oversight, Founder Explains

SHARE

The popular micro-blogging platform, Nairaland.com, is currently experiencing a service interruption, as confirmed by its founder, Seun Osewa. Users raised concerns on Monday night about being unable to access the site, sparking fears of a potential hack.

Upon investigation, it became evident that the server was facing issues, with error messages indicating a server problem. Osewa attributed this setback to a punishment from the server host due to an oversight in handling an abuse report.

In a series of tweets on Tuesday morning, Osewa clarified that the offensive content had been promptly removed upon the abuse report but explained that the server’s user interface was still experiencing delays.

According to Osewa, “Nairaland’s server was taken down because I overlooked an abuse report that was originally sent on the 14th. After the takedown, I removed the offensive content.”

He further revealed that the process of restoring the server faced complications, taking hours to seek support for the user interface issues. However, moments after bringing the forum back online, the server was taken down again without prior warning.

Osewa speculated that cached content on Cloudflare servers might still be visible, despite clearing the caches. He expressed hope for communication from the server host and sought suggestions on working with abuse teams.

Acknowledging the challenge, Osewa mentioned, “If you have any ideas for working with abuse teams, please share. My track record is abysmal.”

He added that the host’s abuse team review could take up to 48 hours, during which the platform may remain inaccessible. Despite the inconvenience, users have shown support, offering suggestions to expedite the resolution and recommending Nairaland’s transformation into a comprehensive social media platform.

This situation highlights the complexities of managing online platforms and the need for effective communication between platform owners and hosting services during such incidents.
