The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly criticised the recent claim by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which alleged that seven out of 10 Nigerian students are involved in cybercrimes. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Senate President of NANS, Akinteye Babatunde, condemned the EFCC’s assertion, describing it as baseless and lacking any empirical basis.

Babatunde emphasised that such a statement damages the reputation of the hardworking and dedicated student community and is also devoid of factual support. The Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, had expressed concern about the alleged involvement of students in cybercrimes, stating, “It is worrisome that seven out of ten students today are involved in cybercrimes. These are the youths we are preparing to be leaders of tomorrow.”

The NANS Senate President disputed this assertion by highlighting the consistent excellence Nigerian students have demonstrated in their academic performance, leadership, and community service. He stressed the importance of upholding the principle of innocence until proven guilty and criticised sweeping statements that unfairly label an entire demographic. Such generalisations, according to Babatunde, are damaging and perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

NANS called on the EFCC chairman to provide concrete evidence supporting the claim or retract the statement immediately. The association expressed its commitment and collaboration to address any concerns related to criminal activities, reaffirming its dedication to fostering a positive and conducive environment for learning, growth, and development.
