United Nigeria Airlines and the Enyimba FC Football Club of Aba have inked a N100 million sponsorship deal. For both organisations, the two-year sponsorship agreement is a significant turning point.

The agreement stipulates that, among other things, the players must utilise the airline’s branded T-shirts and other items, and the squad must have access to airline travel.

The chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, stated during the agreement signing ceremony at the airline’s corporate headquarters in Enugu this past weekend that he was drawn to Enyimba FC because the club’s iconic chairman, Kanu Nwankwo.

“Flying to Unite,” the airline’s motto, is by what football does to Nigerians, according to Okonkwo.

He claims that more than any other sport, football is a significant element in bringing Nigerians together, irrespective of their state, ethnicity, or religion.

“In our corporate social responsibility, we see that as an important thing that we should identify with, and we didn’t find anyone better than working with the King himself, Papilo (Kanu Nwankwo).” He said. “Football is one thing that, if it’s being played, you always place emotional attachment, giving one joy.”

“The Super Eagles game in Atlanta in 1996 was the happiest memory of my life.” Regretfully, the day we lost that match against Italy in 1994 and the Super Eagles was also the saddest event of my life. However, I’ve seen the 1996 Atlanta game more than 50 times since it always refreshes me, especially the semi-final with Kanu at its core.

“I’ll accompany those players wherever they wish to go. Although it may not be significant to this particular occasion, no member of that team will pay for any service I oversee since they have made significant contributions to the happiness and well-being of Nigerians. This is because of the joy of that era.

Kanu Nwankwo, the chairman of Enyimba FC and a former Super Eagles captain, expressed gratitude for the cooperation with United Nigeria Airlines in his words.

Although the club had lost four games in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), he pointed out that the players’ spirits had been raised by the announcement of the airline’s sponsorship.
