The government of Cote d’Ivoire has declared Thursday, January 18, a public holiday for students, with some government parastatals working half a day and closing by 1 pm. This move aims to garner more support for the national football team, the Elephants, ahead of their second AFCON group A game against Nigeria.

The holiday provides citizens ample time to prepare for the crucial match scheduled for 5:45 pm Nigerian time at the Alassane Outtara Stadium in Abidjan. Cote d’Ivoire began their AFCON campaign with a 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau, while Nigeria drew 1-1 against Equatorial Guinea in their opening game.

Students from primary and secondary levels stayed home, while university students attended classes in the morning. Certain government agencies are expected to close at 1 pm to encourage widespread support for the national team.
