Governor Makinde’s Justice Order: Correctional Centre Transformation in Oyo State
Governor Makinde of Oyo State granted clemency to 33 detainees from various Correctional Centres, with 10 released and four death row sentences converted to life imprisonment.
The gesture, signed on January 4, includes sentence reductions for 15 inmates and conditional release for four more. This initiative, lauded by the state’s Controller of Corrections, attempts to create optimism and encourage participation in rehabilitation programmes within the facilities.
Notably, ten people were promptly released, while four students in detention are scheduled to be released after finishing their degrees at the National Open University.
The Correctional Service, which houses nearly 1,800 inmates in Ogbomoso, Ibadan, and Oyo Town, focuses on rehabilitation and skill training for societal reintegration. The process for releasing the accepted inmates is currently underway.
