Lagos Government Takes Bold Step with Immediate Ban on Styrofoam and Single-Use Plastics

SHARE

The Lagos State administration has established a thorough ban on using and distributing styrofoam and other single-use plastics across the state. The prohibition, declared by Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, is in reaction to the environmental risks posed by these non-biodegradable materials, particularly in a densely populated city like Lagos.

Polystyrene, a trademarked type of closed-cell extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) widely used in building insulation and the fabrication of disposable plates, has been singled out for its negative environmental impact. The ban is effective immediately, demonstrating the importance of addressing the ecological threat posed by single-use plastics.
