NDLEA Oyo State: 417 Arrests, 54 Convictions in 2023 for Drug-Related Offenses

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Oyo State has reported the arrest of 417 individuals for drug-related offenses in 2023. During the same period, they secured 54 convictions. Olayinka Joe-Fadile, the NDLEA Commander in the state, disclosed this information in an interview with NAN in Ibadan.

The arrested suspects, consisting of 340 males and 77 females, were apprehended for engaging in the sale of Cannabis sativa, Tramadol, Diazepam, Colorado, and other psychotropic substances. Throughout the year, the command seized eight tonnes of various narcotic and psychotropic substances valued at N135.6 million.

Of the 91 suspects charged by the command, 54 were convicted for various drug-related offenses, receiving jail terms ranging from six months to 10 years. Additionally, the command provided counseling to 246 individuals (205 males and 41 females) who were using drugs. Thirteen people underwent rehabilitation and were successfully reintegrated into society during the review period.

The NDLEA commander also mentioned ongoing efforts to convert a facility in Iseyin into a standard rehabilitation center for counseling and rehabilitation purposes.
