Senegal kicked off their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a convincing victory over The Gambia, securing a 3-0 win in their Group C opener. Pape Gueye opened the scoring for the Teranga Lions in the fourth minute, capitalizing on a pass from Sadio Mane to slot the ball into the net from inside the penalty area. The Gambia faced a setback just before halftime as Cardiff City midfielder Ebou Adams received a red card for an off-the-ball challenge.

Lamine Camara extended Senegal’s lead in the second half with a well-placed low finish, showcasing his skill with a classy third goal from a distance. The Gambia, ranked 126th by FIFA and considered underdogs in the tournament, had their moments, with Edouard Mendy making a crucial save early on. However, Senegal’s dominance continued as they secured their fourth win in a five-match unbeaten run, maintaining a fifth consecutive clean sheet.

With this victory, Aliou Cisse’s side took early control of Group C, pending the outcome of the match between Cameroon and Guinea. The defeat dampened the Gambia’s hopes, but they showed glimpses of threat with first-half attempts from Musa Barrow and Ali Sowe. Senegal’s impressive performance sets the stage for a promising AFCON campaign as they aim to secure their place as strong contenders for the coveted title.
