African musicians compete for Grammy recognition

The introduction of the Best African Music Performance category at the esteemed Grammy Awards has sparked excitement and anticipation across the music industry.

With a diverse array of nominees representing the continent’s rich musical diversity, competition in the category promises to be fierce. Nominees include Burna Boy (City Boys), Olamide Adedeji and Ahmed Ololade aka Asake (Amapiano), Davido featuring Musa Makamu aka Musa Key (Unavailable), and Ayra Starr (Rush).

South Africa’s Tyla Seethal also earned a nomination in the highly contested category for her hit single, ‘Water’.

Additionally, Tems received a nomination in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category for her contribution to the song ‘Lift Me Up’, featured in the film ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.

The creation of the new category by the award organizers aims to spotlight Africa’s significant influence on global music. The inaugural winner will be announced at the award ceremony on Sunday, February 4, 2024, held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, USA.

Meanwhile, Davido received nominations in two other categories—Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance—and expressed his eagerness to clinch the accolades.

Ayra Starr shared her excitement, revealing that she already has her Grammy speech and outfit prepared.

Fans eagerly anticipate Burna Boy’s performance at the ceremony, as the Grammy Award-winner received nominations in three categories—Best Melodic Rap, Best Global Music Album, and Best Global Music Performance.

Other artists scheduled to perform at the event include Billie Eilish, Travis Scott, Olivia Rodrigo, and Luke Combs.
