His Eminence, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the esteemed former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, highlighted that invoking God’s name to justify violence contradicts the essence of authentic religious principles.

During the commemoration of his 80th birthday and the launch of a new book on Thursday, February 1, 2024, Onaiyekan emphasized the pivotal role of religion in fostering harmony.

He expressed satisfaction with the ongoing discourse regarding the imperative need for peace in Nigeria, emphasizing its indispensable role in the nation’s progress.

Contrary to prevalent notions attributing religious tensions to Nigeria’s conflicts, Onaiyekan asserted that genuine faith should serve as a catalyst for tranquility.

According to him, authentic religious practices should prioritize peace above all else, regardless of professed devotion to God.

Onaiyekan cautioned against interpreting religion in a manner that fosters aggression, stressing that genuine peace cannot be achieved through doctrines that endorse hostility and strife.
