FG bans alcoholic beverages in small sachets

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets smaller than 200ml. This decision, announced by NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, comes after manufacturers were given a five-year window, beginning in 2028, to halt production of such drinks in sachets and pet bottles, which expired on January 31, 2024. Enforcement of the ban started on February 1, 2024.

The prohibition stems from concerns about the adverse effects of these small-sized drinks on underage children, who are easily enticed by their affordability and accessibility, leading to potential future repercussions.

Based on recommendations from a committee comprising the Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and industry stakeholders, producers agreed to gradually decrease production and phase out these products by January 31, 2024.

Prioritizing the well-being of Nigerian children and the broader society, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye stressed the risks associated with underage consumption of these banned alcoholic beverages, as well as the defiance of manufacturers still producing them.

NAFDAC’s discovery of ongoing production and stockpiling of banned products and packaging materials prompted swift action, including potential prosecution, to address this violation of Nigerian laws.

Prof Mojisola Adeyeye emphasized the irrevocability of the decision and urged holders of banned products and packaging materials to surrender them to NAFDAC to prevent further repercussions, demonstrating NAFDAC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerians, particularly vulnerable youth, from the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption.
