GRANTING IPOB ASYLUM IN UK IS A DISRESPECT TO NIGERIA

The government of Nigeria through the Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed has reacted

Over the granting of asylum to a “persecuted” Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is a disrespect to Nigeria as a nation

According to the minister “the decision amounted to sabotaging the fight against terrorism and generally undermining the Nigerian security

According to Lai Mohammed the decision is unacceptable to Nigeria

” let me say right away that this issue is within the purview of the Honorable minister of foreign affairs and I am sure he will handle it appropriately.

” But as the spokesman for the Federal government of Nigeria, I will say that if indeed the report that the United Kingdom will grant asylum to supposedly proscribed and persecuted IPOB and MASSOB is true then something is wrong somewhere.

“against the background that IPOB is not only proscribed but also designated as a terrorist organization here in Nigeria, the United Kingdom decision is therefore a disrespect to Nigeria as a nation.

” the decision is amount to sabotaging the fight against terrorism and generally undermining the Nigerian security.

“it is only unconscionable, but it is also inexplicable” he said.

He said “there had recently been heightened attacks against the security agencies in the South-East Zone.

The minister said, IPOB had been fingered as being behind the attacks in spite of its denial.

For the UK to choose this time to give  succour to IPOB beggars belief and calls to questions the UK’s real intention.

“if we could go down the memory lane, what the UK has done is like offering asylum to members of the IRA before the 1998 good peace agreement, he said.

NAN reports that the UK Visas and immigration (UKVI)  had released new guidelines to its decision makers on how to consider a grant  asylum application by members of the Biafran secessionist groups.

“in the guidelines asylum is to be granted to “persecuted” members of IPOB, a group that Nigeria has designated as a terrorist organization.

Also in the guidelines asylum is to be granted to the Movement for the  Actualization of sovereign state of Biafra.
