The United States Government has said that insecurity in Nigeria increased under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari

This was contained in a ‘2020 Report on International Religious Freedom: Nigeria‘ published on Wednesday by the U.S. Department of States.

Buhari was re-elected for a second term in 2019 and this U.S. report claimed that aside from “concern over religious tensions” in the year 2020, criminality hike.

“Criminal groups committed crimes of opportunity, including kidnapping for ransom, armed robbery, and banditry in North West and South East regions. According to security experts, this criminal activity increased in volume, geographic scope, and attendant violence during the year.

“General insecurity throughout the country’s regions increased during the year; a terrorist insurgency in the North East.

Brazen kidnapping and armed robbery rings in the North West and southern regions; militant groups and criminal gangs in the South South region; and conflict between farmers and herders over access to land in the North Central region,” the May 12 report stated.

It also added that most of these attacks were carried out by “local armed criminal groups”.

However, the report further noted that the federal and state governments has not stressed out more effort in fighting the menace across the country.

“Federal and state governments responded to increased criminality in the region with new security initiatives,” it stated.

Meanwhile, there are reports of attacks and killings across the country in 2021.

But President Buhari had in a tweet on May 5, reassured Nigerians that despite the current challenges, his administration was committed to securing the country.

He also urged Nigerians, including politicians to be patriotic and not politicize issues of security.

“I call for steadfastness & security awareness on the part of the law enforcement agencies, and citizens.

Let me once again condemn the increasing politicization of security in Nigeria, by opportunistic politicians. All hands must be on deck to achieve enduring peace & security,” he tweeted”.
