Kwara Police Foil Armed Robbery, Fatally Shoot Suspect and Recover Stolen Car

In a decisive move, the anti-robbery squad of the Kwara State Police Command thwarted a potentially dangerous situation on Wednesday when they shot and killed a suspected member of a five-man armed robbery gang in the Sango area of Ilorin metropolis. The swift action also resulted in the recovery of a stolen Toyota Camry car.

According to reliable sources, the hoodlums, traveling in a Toyota Corolla car, had earlier snatched a Toyota Camry from its owner in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on the same day. The suspects, numbering five, split into two groups, with three in the stolen Toyota Corolla and two inside the snatched Toyota Camry.

The suspected armed robbers attempted to escape to Ilorin, Kwara State’s capital, but their plans were thwarted when intercepted and chased by police operatives. The pursuit reached a climax at Kulende, Sango area, where the armed robbers in the Toyota Camry were trapped during the hot chase.

In the ensuing confrontation, one of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, leading to the loss of consciousness. The vehicle collided with an electric pole, breaking it in two, and also damaged nearby shops. The armed robber with the gunshot wound succumbed to his injuries, while the other occupant managed to escape.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire Adeyemi-Adetoun, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation is underway. “I’m aware of the incident; one of the armed robbers was shot dead, while others escaped. We have started an investigation into the incident,” she said.
