The Burundi Football Federation has appointed Alphonse Kanega as the new director for the U20 Women’s team, replacing Mupenda Mohsin, just four days before the crucial return leg of the final qualifying round for the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup against Nigeria’s Falconets. Following a 1-0 defeat in the first leg in Dares Salaam, Tanzania, the Burundi Football Federation has changed the technical crew to overturn the result and secure qualification.

The second leg match is scheduled at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Saturday, with the Falconets holding a 1-0 advantage. The Burundi team faces the challenge of turning the tables, and the appointment of Alphonse Kanega signifies a swift change in leadership after the disappointing performance in the first leg.

Despite the tight timeframe, the Burundi Football Federation hopes the new director will bring fresh strategies and motivation to the U20 Women’s team. Conversely, the Falconets only need a draw to secure their spot in the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Colombia. The pressure is on Burundi to deliver a strong performance and overcome the deficit in this crucial qualifier.
