A court in Lagos has put a 25-year-old woman named Nwobi Olubube Favour and her mother, Nwobi Ebele Angela (55), in custody for allegedly making two underage girls work for them as domestic helpers.

The judge, Justice Abimbola Awogboro, ordered their detention after they pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

The charges include keeping and using the two young girls for household chores between May and November 2023.

The prosecutor, Uzunwa I. Egonu, said their actions harmed the physical, social, and mental well-being of the teenagers.

Apart from the child labor accusations, NAPTIP also charged them with assaulting two agency officials and stealing their laptop and iPhone 8 during an incident at the agency’s office in GRA, Ikeja, on March 12.

The prosecutor asked for a trial date and for them to be kept in custody. Their lawyer requested a short adjournment to file bail applications. The judge set the next court date for May 7.
